hi there !

we moved from delaware to Asheville 4 weeks ago. there is pretty much nothing we miss besides friends and .... the ocean !

we would like to go to the beach over labor day weekend (or one weekend before/after) and I was wondering, if anyone can recommend a state park (or private campground) to me.

we have three children (8,10,14), so some happenings/a nature center etc would be great - and a dog and a small pop-out trailer.

we used to go to Assateague Island, MD, which was a lovely state park, directly at the beach.

what would be the closest, but still a nice place for a couple of days if you come from WNC ?

thanks for any input !

HUNTING island , sc. find it around beufort sc.

might be too late to get a spot but it is a most
lovely campground right on the beach.

there is also HUNTINGTON state park? close to myrtle beach, have heard
it also is a nice campground on the ocean.

i would gamble on one of those since you are in the asheville area, much faster/shorter
for you to hit the sc beaches.
make sure dogs are allowed, i know they are at huntington.

Huntington Beach State Park,
Edisto
Hunting Island

All three are ON the beach (or maybe a 50' walk), all great facilities.

Does it have to be right ON the beach? Carolina Beach State park is lovely - it is not right on the ocean, but is very close to it:

Assategue is like Fisher with camp grounds and lots of misquito's and horse flies depending on whether you are on the state or federal part.

I'd say Flanner's Beach. It'll allow to you to explore New Bern as well as the Beach. It's along the Neuse and about 30 minutes from the ocean proper down at Atlantic Beach where you can check out Fort Macon and the Aquarium and swing over to Beaufort and see the Blackbeard exhibit in the Maritime museum. In New Bern you can check out Tryon's Palace, the cow cafe, and Firemen's Museum among other things.

the OP is asking for the closest beach when coming from asheville area,
hence SC beaches are the easiest to reach.
I suspect local Ashevilletonians have already told her as much.

Hammocks Beach State Park...you can camp right on the beach and must take a ferry or private canoe/kayak over to the state park.
