Hi everyone,
My husband and I are looking to move from the Raleigh area to the Wilmington area. We want to be closer to the beach, but good schools are a must because we have a little one. We are looking for a dog friendly environment too, since he's part of the family too. I have researched and Ogden, Monkey Junction, and Forest Hills have come up a lot. What is the best area to live, and are taxes through the roof? Thanks
If schools are a concern why would you even consider leaving the Triangle for Wilmington? Wilmington schools do not compare to the schools of Chapel Hill, Cary, or Wakefield/Leesville, etc. I am originally from Cary, currently live in New Bern, and considered relocating to Wilmington. We decided it was not for us. We would have had to pay 15-20k/year/child for private schools since the public schools were unacceptable IMO. The cost of living in Wilmigton is comperable to Chapel Hill/Cary, wages are much lower and YES the taxes are through the roof along with the additional homeowners insurance policies you would have to purchase for being so close to the coast. We decided against it and are getting our ducks in a row so we can move back to Cary. Everyone is different and it may be a good move/fit for you. It just wasnt for us.

I sure hope you get to escape out of nc real soon.
best of luck.
If you want lower property taxes, stay outside of city limits. Forest Hills is an affluent area inside city limits so the taxes would be much higher. Your real estate agent should be able to tell you the taxes on each house you look at.
