Moving to OBX
Hello all, this is my first post to this fine board. My DH & I would like to move to OBX or near by. We so far like Manteo, Wanchese and Stumpy Point (slim pickins there). Does any one have any suggestions & concerns about these areas? What is E City like? We want a safe area, preferably quiet & not touristy. We have not looked yet but we will check out Kitty Hawk area near the big visitors center. Thanks!

That's a pretty broad area you've covered there. Are you retiring or moving for work?

Wow...um...Well Manteo is the most touristy during the summer. Then Wanchese and no one goes to Stumpy Point. KH is also like Manteo. I've always thought EC had a little more crime, but I have no facts to prove/disprove that/

we are already retired, I am in my mid 50's, dh in his early 60's. We want quiet, minimal crime., ie we leave stuff out & the HS kids don't steal it. We want to sit in our back yard, build a fire in our fire pit, smoke & drink quietly, enjoy our lives with out snow, yes we are Northeners but dont hold that against us. We are not in favor of huge wal marts and such, we want peace & quiet with nice neighbors who don't care about where youy work or what you earn. Will you join us in having a beer and chips & dip?
Talk about base ball, fishing and the weather? We are just regular people who will give yoiu sweet ice tea, look after your house if you go away on vac & look after your kitties & dogs. We just want a nice place to live & You can come to see us as you are.

What is the budget? Have you looked north towards Duck or Currituck? I would suggest looking at little Washington as well. It is IBX but on the water.

Duck is beyond our reach price wise, we love Duck but we can't afford the prices, we just don't have the wealth to live in Duck as much as we would love to, Duck is so pretty.

Manteo would be a good choice, but you have to deal with day trippers visiting the island.Few tourists actually reside there during their visit. The Currituck mainland has low crime and is more of a rural environment.I'd avoid E City like the plague.Too much violent crime,gangs,etc.....

OBXF-M thanks for the info about E City, I kinda feared that when I read of an old house for sale. We are in the suburbs and that is bad enough. We do like the more rural areas, but we also don't want to have to drive a long distance to be by the ocean or any water for that matter. DH likes to fish.
Z-Man we need to keep it under 200K. We did see some nice places in Manteo for less than that that were not in what I call downtown Manteo.

kitty, I get the impression that you've never been to the OBX. Is that correct? Because I'll be honest with you. If you're looking for regular neighbors and peace and quiet then the OBX isn't what you want, especially in the summertime. And there is more than one big box store there. The whole of Kitty Hawk and Nags Head is one big commercial business/summer rental house heaven. The main road there is 3 lanes north and 3 lanes south. It gets completely jammed with traffic in the summertime.
There is no Amity Island there.

I agree. If it has to be on the Outer Banks, the further south the better, it sounds like. You can't get anymore isolated in North Carolina than on Ocracoke.
