I agree with the prestigious of those places....but I thought the OP was asking for the most prestigious in NC. (This is the NC forum...not SC.)
Honestly not sure if we have anything like those on our coast, but then I don't go for the 'resort' stuff. We find a nice beach house to rent several times a year.
Which area along the coast is the most prestigious? With more upscale shopping, finer restaurants and just has that upscale feeling to it.
Bald Head is pretty neat, we enjoyed it back in the early nineties, but I'm not sure there is much shopping or even more than two or three restaurants.
I would nominate Beaufort, NC on a good day when a lot of the sail boats are in town.
Granted if you get away from the historic district things change rapidly, but so do things around the Greenbrier.
Beaufort now has many absentee property owners and some sky high prices in the historic district and along Front St.
Stillwater at Front Street, Beaufort Grocery, Sharpies, and Blue Moon Bistro are all very nice upscale spots to eat.
There's also some nice shopping. Maybe it isn't as fancy as the rest of them, but it's still a lot of fun and one of my favorite spots.
There is no shortage of money or well heeled out of town visitors wandering the streets .
I really hated to see the Cedars Bed & Breakfast close, that was a very special spot. We stayed there for our 30th anniversary.
Last time I was in town it was still for sale. That would be good project for someone, bring back the Cedars B&B.

In North Carolina, for visiting, that would be the Outer Banks. For living, Wilmington, NC. Keep in mind that in the coastal South, towns are charming but not exactly prestigious in flavor. Pick up the magazine "Southern Living" to get a better idea of what the area is like.
