How is Zip Code 28465?
It's what you would call a "small town", except for in the summer. The population of normally 10,000 goes up to around 100,000 from the winter to the summer.
Crime? Not much. There have only been a couple murders; one was the murder of the owner of a local pier for money, I think... but most locals knew the guy that did it. I don't know if this really helps, but I like to think that knowing who's doing the ill deeds will keep you safe from those types of people.
There is a lot of petty theft, especially by teenagers. Most of these teenagers don't even LIVE on Oak Island, and they steal mostly for drug money. The drug network here is surprisingly large and well-stocked; most of the population in Brunswick County has smoked a reefer once or twice. Many of the kids in high school do this, a surprisingly large percentage-- but not all.
According to the Department of Juvenile Justice, two new gangs have come to Oak Island, but they're getting heavy coverage from the police force that we have. The suspected factions belong to the Five-Pointers and MS-33, a mostly El-Salvador-based gang. According to DJJ (and rumor), the initiation of one of the new members to one of these (most likely MS-33) is to rape a white girl (rumor is that she is to be employed by an American business like Wal-Mart or Sunoco, but not a locally-owned one) and make her wish she were never born.
This is scary, but something that you need to be aware of.
That doesn't mean it's not relatively safe; all places are dangerous, some more than others.
The drugs don't cause much violence, considering it's mostly teenagers trying to score some grass, and the network is well-concealed until adolescence and adulthood.
