Hi,

I'll be making a permanent move to the Leland/Wilmington area at some point in 2012.

I'm trying to understand something about getting a NC drivers license, that maybe someone can educate me on...

I understand when I go to change my NY drivers license for a NC license I'll have to take the vision test as well as a written and road sign test. Since I already have a valid NY drivers license and a clean driving record, do I also have to take a road test?? YIKES!

Also, since I'll most likely be in Leland, which DMV should I go to to get my new license and get my car registered.

Any info you can share with me on this process would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time,

John

It's a road SIGN test, just your abilility to recognize shapes and colors of the road signs. Memorize the samples in the test book and you'll do fine.

Thanks - but I'm mostly concerned about having to do a road test. I'm wondering if a road test is required in addition to the written and signs test.

You do not have to take a road test if you have a valid NY DL.

I moved here from NY last year. I didn't have to do a road test, just the sign test and an eye test.

Make sure that you bring the proper documents with you when you apply for your NC license. One item is your social security card. Check the website or the NC driver's handbook for what is required. If you don't have what is needed they will turn you down.

IMHO the questions that were asked on the written test were bizarre. If you Google "NC driver's test questions" you can see some of the questions and answers that are on the test.

Good luck.

We got our licenses at the Jacksonville office in June and had no problem with documents with just initials. The clerks are not paranoid around here.

My wife and I just moved here from NJ and got our new NC drivers licenses last week in Shallotte, NC.

I will agree that the officials at the agency were quite nice, very helpful and not at all paranoid about the whole procedure. We had to take a vision test which is coupled with identifying road signs and then a test, on a computer. The official was very "helpful" when I could not ID one of the signs...... the computer questions are multiple choice and sample questions are online ( which were very helpful, I recommend looking at them ).... however, not to worry "too" much, they don't tell you this up front but if you do fail the computer test you can take it again immediately....... lots of people from NY and NJ are driving around down here and "somehow" they passed their tests.

Your social security card must have full name.
