I moved from Wilmington about 4 years ago. At that time traffic was pretty much gridlocked all the time and the schools from what I was told were complete crap. There were several projects underway to fix both of these issues when I was moving and my question is, did those projects fix anything? It was new bridges and highways and teacher reforms and some other things. What would you say is the best elementary school and middle school in the area? I'm considering moving back but I have two kids now days and have to put their education first and I cannot afford private school.

No, traffic hasn't changed in 4 years.

Compared to DC or Chicago it's not bad but for a city of it's size the traffic is beyond ridiculous. I lived off of Kerr Ave. and couldn't turn left out of my drive way for about 8-10 hours of the day.

I didn't have any kids in school when I lived in Wilmington, that is why I'm trying to find out what school district is the best in the area. I'm not opposed to Carolina Beach but will not live in Brunswick county. I've tried to search on here and there are no clear answers.

What specifically did you find wrong with the schools when you were in Wilmington before? EG, discipline, low reading scores, classes too large etc.?

I like the schooldigger.com tool. Just to test it, I put in Rocky Point, NC (Pender County) at 28457, and within 10 miles. The elementary and middle schools range 2 or 3 out of 5, and that is mediocre in my book.

A friend used to teach 2nd grade in Pender County, and she complained about parents not being motivated, too many kids in the class, having to teach to the achievement test, so they don't have time to teach cursive writing anymore. Here's my results, and you might try it with other communities you are interested in: North Carolina Schools - Find a Public or Private North Carolina School - SchoolDigger.com

I tried the same search with Carolina Beach 28428, and it turns up several elementary schools with a 4 out of 5 rating, including Carolina Beach Elementary, so that may not be a bad choice. Keep in mind that we have had budget cuts, and many teachers aide positions have been cut. In addition, Heyward Bellamy Elementary in Wilmington (28412) rates an 8 of 10 from Greaschools.com, and some good reviews from parents.

yeah. not sure what you heard about schools before besides maybe overcrowding. In general New Hanover is one of only 3 above average school districts in the ENC. Not to say other districts don't have individual schools that are the exception.
