I am a single mom looking to relocate to the Wilmington area and I would love to find a job working in any of the school districts. I have been employed in SC as a teaching assistant since 2004 and I would love to continue in this profession. The relocation will be after this school year winds down. If any one can help tell me if there is a need for teaching assistants in the public school system,or offer any information I greatly would appreciate it.
I can not speak directly to whether and/or where there are current needs for teaching/teacher assisstants, however, I wanted to let you know that when I owned a business, I had a couple of girls who worked for me who both were getting their teachining degrees from UNCW. They had to fight just to get student teacher assignments and ended up having to go further out of Wilmington to do so.
I would hope that b/c you already have experience and a niche in special needs that you will have an easier time finding a position, but you are competing in a town with a well established teaching college, so you will have more competition. And our state has suffered some major set backs in public education funding recently as well.
If you are willing to go out further in to the less developed and sometimes under served areas, you may have better luck.
I am sorry to post such a downer answer, but I would recommend doing so research via the state education website, the Dept of Labor website, etc on job outlook.
Dear ANonyMs.... Thank you for your reply as well as your input to look further. I love my career and I also have a CMA in the medical field(Clinical Med Assistant) which I did in NY prior to moving down South. I just prefer the educational route as to the medical because I have a 10/13 yr old and I like to be home with them on their breaks and over the summer. I will gladly take your advice and look further out. Have a great day!
An awful lot of teaching asst positions have been cut throughout the state due to budgets. You need to investigate very thoroughly the number of positions and any openings, if you need the income from the job to support you after you move. Unfortunately, we keep hearing the next budget will be even worse. Now is NOT a good time to be entering the field of education in NC.
Thank you for your response. It seems as if I may have to go back into the Medical field.....Just want to have a great job and take care of my two awesome kids and be happy all at the same time..........
Just be aware that in many NC counties, the teacher assistants are required to drive the school buses. Best of luck in your search.
