I live in Eastern NC and I have decided I REALLY want to become a cop! However, I have a criminal background. I have a 2 DUI's and when I got the 2nd one I had a 15 yr old boy in the car with me so was also charged with Child Endangerment and Driving Under Suspension. All of these charges are almost 5 yrs old or more and happened in another state. I am also currently trying to have some of the charges expunged. I have been told that I can never be certified and that even if I could be, no department will ever hire me. Is this the case or could I still have a chance to become a cop? Would the charges still affect me if I have them expunged? Any advice or info would be appreciated!

Perhaps you should ask this on the NC general thread? I'm not sure of how many responses you will get on the "coastal NC" thread. I'm sure all police agencies throughout NC have the same requirements (clean background, etc).

I would contact your local CC that offers the BLET classes who could give you an actual answer, as opposed to asking the opinion of a bunch of perceived laymen.

I expect you have no chance. I seem to remember somewhere that a DUI will get you, but really, don't ask here, as the local police which is the best source for a definitive answer. It certainly is not city data.

Others may have to forgive me for being "real".... but seeing as how we do live in reality I would suggest you try some other line of work. The criminal behavior that you have exhibited thus far in life would "hint" at your complete disregard and disrespect for the law, not to mention your personal judgement..... whether it was five years ago or five minutes ago..... if you somehow think that whatever law enforcement agency that you would be applying to is manned by complete idiots and does not have computers that reach across jurisdictions for what will be a "quite thorough" anal investigation, I believe you are in for a rude awakening !
