Have you considered the Outer Banks? Not exactly the cultural center of the universe, but the weather is lovely...and in summer, the winds help mitigate the heat. After all, that's why the Wright Brothers chose to fly there.

And not 90 miles north is Virginia. And west is Raleight/Durham ( a university area) and south is lots o' things.

We are retiring there...at least that's our plan right now.
