Like I said, I haven't been to this particular area, so it's helpful to know about the military base. That does tend to influence the area. I also haven't known North Carolina in general to be an issue for interracial couples thus far. I LOVED living in Boone and heard today that it is the 5th fastest growing city! Too bad- I loved the small town charm. We would prefer a much warmer climate though! No more snow for me Thank you wrestlingterp and LLN for your friendly posts.

presupposing that others will be bigots, is offensive

that you don't realize that it is offensive, is incredible

bottomline, by and large we don't care about a person's race, bi-race or anything else inconsequential. A good person is a good person. and that is what counts where I come from.

to say that there are no bigots around eastern nc, is keeping ones head in the sand. you might have worded it a little better.
that said, you and your family surely have a coping strategy for when this happens?
best thing is to make sure to be a good person and you will attract the same.

how much land/acreage are you looking for? price range would also help.

We personally love Wilmington as it is the only city on the east coast progressive enough for us[ don't mean to offend anyone, it's the truth for us].

You have to understand the absolute worst thing you can do to a white person, especially conservative whites, is to accuse them of bigotry. It's like their version of the n-word.

You said you lived in Boone; that's pretty much the worst it gets with regard to intolerance outside the really isolated areas. As with most places the more rural, the higher the likelihood you'll run into problems. In eastern NC, the larger towns will be your best bet, but Greenville in particular considering you're looking for a job in medicine, should be at the top of your list.

While it's far less diverse than the rest of coastal NC, Dare county paradoxically has some of the most laissez-faire attitude toward those things, and a half-decent school system to boot. Not as many opportunities in the medical field, but there are some, depending on you and your spouse's particular line of work.

The OP sounds like some sort that needs attention. Life is pretty simple, if you are nice usually people are nice back.

There are no bigots of consequence. Those that are frequently are marginalized losers.

Other than a few dates when I was single, I'm not that familiar with being part of an interracial family or interracial relationship. But have a look at the "similar threads" list below this thread - clearly, it's a concern of many people everywhere in this country.

I agree that the OP was a bit tactless in phrasing her question. But I'm guessing that she has a perspective and experience with THIS specific issue that most of us lack.

Default Historically African American Beach

Just as a note of interest, there is a part of Topsail Island that was one of the earliest places in North Carolina where African-Americans could buy oceanfront property. It's just north of Surf City, it used to be called Ocean City. I often attend church there in the summer at the Chestnut Chapel. There's a very nice group of families still in the area, many are children of original owners.

"My husband is African-American and our son is bi-racial, so we would prefer not to live with a bunch of bigots! We are both familiar with the south and love it, despite the occasional racism you run into. Coming from liberal Colorado though, it is nice to live amongst those who are like-minded."

If you asked a licensed real real estate broker that question and they answered it in any other way than, "No comment" or "I can't respond to that" would give grounds for having their license revoked.
