Hello. My wife and i with our 2 kids are moving to Wilmington from Indiana in June. We are trying to figure out which elementary schools are good? I also would like to know why the jobs seem to pay so sh***y around Wilmington,if it cost so much to live there? My wife and i make about 75,000 to 80,000 right now and she is taking a pay cut on her new job she got at at hanover regional Medical Center, and i am in the HVAC field and i know i will be taking a pretty good cut myself. Wilmington is a beautiful city and we cant wait to get there, we are just scared we wont be able to afford it

pay is low because of labor supply (high) and demand (low).

cost of living is high (relative to pay) because you're competing with unemployed millionaires for a piece of dirt to live on.

Le roi said it all- supply and demand. Look at Leland, Burgaw, Rocky Point and Hampstead for cheaper housing. Hampstead probably has the better schools.

Its just totaly rediculous to see jobs out there paying $7.50 to 10 per hr for skilled professions. Hell you can make $10 at mcdonalds here!! I think it would be cheaper for me to stay home and watch our kids rather than send them to daycare. The cost of living is pretty much the same around where i live except for housing. I see that its cheaper to buy than to rent

Okay, then why are you moving? It's not "totally ridiculous" for a business to pay what the market offers based on supply and demand. Keeping expenses - including payroll -as low as reasonably possible is one of the basic tenants of running a good, stable, profitable business.

Why specifically Wilmington though? It isn't just the ocean. Maybe there's somewhere else that pays more of what you're used to.

My wife got a job at the hospital. I would love to live in wilmington its a beautiful city and it would be an awesome place for my kids to grow up and for us to retire. Better weather than Indiana also.

I apologize for getting testy. If you install new HVAC equipment, there is a lot of construction going on in the Jacksonville area. It's a feasible commute from Wilmington. If you do maintenance, I think there are jobs, but you may have to be flexible to get in the door.
