We just got back, and one thing I noticed were all the rocks or stones on the beach. They were all so smooth and pretty. Where did these come from? Not used to seeing rocks like these at a beach.

In the Pre-Cambrian era these metamorphic rocks were washed out to sea from the Piedmont Plain rivers. About 3 billion years ago. Why they only show up on Topsail Island beaches is a mystery. But enjoy them - it seems to me there are less of them than 30 years ago.

I know this is an old thread, but the origin of the rocks also puzzled me. I have a lump I picked up on North Topsail Beach which looks like petrified whale vomit, if anything. It is a 5 in long oval, mostly grainy like bits of grass. It also has chunks of embedded seashell.

Any idea what this is?
