Default Trying to decide between Emerald Isle or Bald Head Isle?

Help! Have always gone to OBX (Corolla, Duck) and want a change. Family of 4, kids are 10 and 7. Want: beautiful, uncrowded beaches, nature tours, peaceful...will be renting home. Would also love SOME kids activities (heard EI has an aquarium, and also a shelling island or very shallow area to dive for conch shells?) Bald Head is a bit further for us (from VA) but were leaning that way because some of the feedback we hard about EI was that it is "boring"...I would imagine Bald Head is worse! We don't mind boring by the way, but like OBX, would love to have shops, restaurants, places to rent beach stuff, etc.

ANY recommendations on either? Prefer the closer drive to Emerald but would consider Bald Head...something neat about the golf carts/no driving, etc.

And if Bald Head, would we be disappointed staying more inland (not near beach) off the marsh, creek or river? Thanks!

I've only been to BHI once and there wasn't a whole lot to do. It's nice, but I can't imagine going on vacation there. EI has the aquarium, the beach, and nearby you have Ft Macon, and Cape Lookout.

You do not (at least your family does not) want to go to BHI...in 20 years, probably, but not now!

If you can get to Cape Lookout, that would be a great family day with exploring the island and lighthouse, as well as the best shelling in NC.

BHI has a lot of that stuff. Plus Fort Fisher aquarium is close by. BUT there is a private ferry for BHI. Round-trip tickets cost $24.75 for adults, $13.75 for children ages 3-12. Here is a bunch of stuff for kids. The ferry from Southport to Fort Fisher is $5/car.

BHI is nothing like the rest of the beaches in NC. No vehicles (minus emergency) are allowed on the island. Only golf carts. It's also the northernmost subtropical environment on the East Coast. So a lot of unique opportunities there. Due to the steep price, it is a lot more secluded, as opposed to HI, or EI, etc.
