I was just reading in Our State Magazine that in the fall, they will be opening a climate-controlled building to house the C.S.S. Neuse. That is the Civil War ironclad which briefly sailed in the Neuse River.

After I researched it a little, it sounds interesting enough for a day trip to Kinston. My husband is interested in Civil War history, and I will have a chance to do some shopping at the Lenox Factory Cutlet. There's also a farmer's market in Kinston, a Fire Museum, a demonstration farm for kids, and a few historic sites. There could be enough to do for a day or two. Some details here: Field Trips, A Educational Adventure - Visit Kinston, NC

Does anyone local know when the climate-controlled building for the Neuse is actually planned to open?

I know they moved the ship back in late may and still loads of work to do. They had to leave an entire front wall open to get the ship in (it is huge). Now you have to fill in the hole and do all of the finishing work plus the rest of the building and related exhibits. The site has a Facebook page with info and I know folks who work there. My bet is most likely sometime in the spring of 2013 for a grand opening maybe a soft opening sooner. I have been in during construction and it will be a very nice facility and fitting for the ship.
