Me and my wife went on vacation to atlantic beach and fell in love with it. So how well do the jobs pay here? We live in sevierville tn where jobs are base on tourist pretty much. I do maintenace for resort and avg about 600 to 700 a week, wife does housekeeping at hotel avg about 700 every 2 weeks. Can we expect to get this kind of money if we take the move to emerald isle or atlantic beach? If not is there better part of the outer banks along cost that would be better. Thanks

Well, if that's all you make, you will barely be able to afford to live there. Even a 1 bedroom mobile home in the inland rents for $650-800 year round. In addition, the jobs for your wife will disappear in the fall, as there is very little tourism in the winter.

You might find apartment maintenance jobs year-round in Morehead City or Jacksonville. I have read of people on the Outer Banks finding year-round jobs in the fields such as medical or teaching-- search the forum for that.

I have family up your way and I can tell you the economy of EI/AB will be much like where you are from and tourist based. Many places hire seasonally and in the winter can be very very slow. Wages won't be much different than where you are but cost of living more. Housing is more either renting or buying and insurance is much higher due to the hurricane issue. It is a great area, grew up down there still go due to my work but it is getting to the point that only upper middle class and up will be able to afford to actually live on the island, unless you have owned a place there for a long time. That being said looking inland a ways and working on the island or the area is an option but you will be inland which is completely different. But I agree EI is a great place, al of the Crystal COast is. Good luck and message me in pvt if you have specific questions

Hi There!
I've worked in the hotel industry in Jacksonville, NC for 4+ years (recently resigned as we're relocating). I was always looking for a better opportunity in the industry so kept an eye on any jobs along the Crystal Coast also.

Unfortunately the going rate for hotel work in the area seems to be just a touch above minimum wage ($7.25) and slightly above for maintenance (between $8 and $10 an hour) regardless of experience (before moving to NC I was in management at a Hyatt Regency in the Midwest and made a lot more).

Another consideration is the fact that during winter, your hours can drop off inordinately (some of my employees and coworkers at the Jville hotel had as little as 18-20 hours a week in fall/winter when there weren't deployments going in or out).

As for cost of living in Emerald Isle- I'll leave that to somebody else to answer. I agree that it is gorgeous there, but I definitely wouldn't expect to make the same as what yourself and your wife are earning at the moment.

Average your hours out at about 30 hrs a week a piece at $7.35 for housekeeping and worst case scenario, $8.50 for maintenance, take out tax, and decide from there whether you can afford it or not!

Good Luck and I hope that helps!

-A

P.S. Hotels and Resorts in Eastern NC pay HORRIBLY!!!
