Looking to move into a house next year adjacent to ECU. I'd like to be in the neighborhood known as TRUNA or to students as "the grid." Question is it seems really hard to get a decent house there? How does one even go about getting in contact with landlords?

If you live in the Greenville area you can ride around and get landlord numbers or websites from those houses/apartments that advertise on the yard/porch/window. If you're already a student at ECU you can try their message board. There's Craigslist, and if you do a deep enough Google search of "apartments ECU Greenville NC" you'll come across websites like this:

If you got the money, you can find a good house. Like Phil said, signs will either be in the yard, or pop up during the spring semester.

I agree that just taking a drive to write down the numbers and checking on craiglslist are your best bet.
