Closing on our new home in Hampstead in a few weeks. Looking for any suggestions for our homeowners insurance policy. I was NOT ready for the shock of homeowners insurance in North Carolina. So far...I have a couple of quotes....both were FOUR times what we pay for the same coverage here in Maine. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not surprised it's a lot more expensive in Hampstead, due to the risk of damage from hurricanes. About all you can do is shop around.

We use a broker named Don Bullard at (910) 791-5400. We shopped around and still pay $2400. There are two components to insurance around here: the normal perils, and the wind and hail damage. The wind and hail is the costly one.

Most people that move here are fairly prepared for most home costs. It's when they get to homeowner's insurance that most are not prepared for. The way the state forces all homeowners in the state to subsidize those along the coast is the reason.

We just signed on with farm bureau, they seemed the most competitive to me after shopping all around.
I used Anna brothers out of Wilmington, she was very helpful. The expensive part was the wind and hail,
homeowners was cheap, we are south of Wilmington towards Carolina beach.

How did you get Farm Bureau? They cancelled my policy as of Jan 1st and said they were totally pulling out of North Carolina altogether?

I think the real issue here is getting a new policy. We have had Farm Bureau in New Bern for 5 years.

Sorry to say this but recent damage to our roof/chimney was an ordeal. The local agent, my best friend it seemed after we bought through him, could only give me the number to Wind and Hail out of Raleigh.

Never been involved with greater JackAsses. Thank God our damage was relatively minor...in FB's eyes.

I cannot believe what it would be like to deal with Wind and Hail for a catastrophic, big time hurricane damage.

I used to work in stop-loss insurance, a bit esoteric, but I familiar with the product.

Without doubt, in insurance, you get what you pay for.

Hi LLN,

It seemed to me the wind and hail premiums were the same through the few I shopped,
Bankers, American something and Farm. The difference was the homeowners premiums, was your
claim through home owners? If that is the case, that is not comforting? Are you switching companies?

Thanks

Jay
