Thank you, for the helpful information listed above. I am looking for a safe place to retire. I'm originally from Upstate NY; but have lived all over our great country. I don't mind simple...I just was to ”survive” and age in place. I am also looking at Washington, NC, but concerned about crime. I am a nice person, and want to be a contributing part of a community. Please, tell me there aren't alot of folks there STILL fighting the civil war. I had nothing to do with it.

While the original question was about a town for a young family, I think Washington, NC is a good place for a retiree. Also look at Chocowinity if you can afford a riverfront option.

Among retirees, there will not be a lot of people still fighting the civil war. You will see an occasional pickup truk flying the Stars and Bars. In Wilmington, there are chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. There may be an occasional person stil advocating seceeding again. However, You are more likely to find friendly folks among the native North Carolinians.

As a suggestion however, do not talk politics with anyone unless you know them well.

Any comments on the availability of health food, organic produce, farmer's markets, etc.? Is one or another towns in the region a better fit that way?
In the 10 years since the original question, the availability of healthy food options has vastly improved. I can routinely find organic, lactose-free and gluten-free options at the local Food Lion. You can get free-range eggs and local produce from farm stands. Most restaurants now have vegetarian options, and some have gluten-free.
