Thanks with all your help

Newport is in western Carteret Co. along the central NC coast. It is anywhere from 1-6 miles west of Morehead City and Atlantic Beach, NC. So if you like the beach there is plenty to do. Since Newport is located near the beach, you have your usual night clubs and all. However, it slows down there a lot during the winter months. (or offseason)

Other than that, Newport is a great little town. The cost of living is very low compared to larger NC cities. In Newport itself there is not much to do, but everything is within 5 miles. There is also a Wal-mart and shopping center.

The storms are never really bad there. Expect wind gusts from Hurricanes to reach 100 mph. But it is really not that bad. Trust me, I lived in the area for nearly 20 years. However, the potential is there for a cat 5 Hurricane. I guess it's just a matter of time.

Good luck

My brother and sister in-law live there, they have been there for about 9 years from NJ. We visited for the first time last year. It's close to the beach and you have your little shopping areas like Walmart and such. Jobs might be a problem, if I lived there I wouldn't know where I'd work. My sister in-law works for Alltel customer service and her husband is in construction. I noticed a lot of building going on there last year. The closest real mall they tell me is more than an hour away. They like it a lot, I don't think I could live there, I like a little more action. They've had some storms but nothing where they had to leave their home as of yet. Anyway they love it and would never consider moving.

I am planning to relocate to Newport next summer. I work at the air base about 10 minutes away. If all goes as planned Newport here we come!
