I have the opportunity to transfer to a job in Jacksonville and have a lot of questions about the character of the area, housing prices, points of interest etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I like Jacksonville. A lot of people don't because of the all the marines. But it is not that bad. They have all the shopping and places to eat you need. There really is not much of a downtown though.

It is located just 10-15 minutes from the beach though. Swansboro is great little historic town on the water just 10 minutes from Jacksonville in Onslow Co. So if you like the ocean, Jacksonville is not a bad choice.

It is also a clean city. Very nice

So what exactly does that tell me about the area? Are the Marines a negative of some sort?

Just be aware it is a military town, that's all It's not the prettiest place in NC by any means, but people have posted here that they think it is a nice slower paced place to live.

I beg to differ. Swansboro, which is pretty much Jacksonville, is one of the nicest, prettiest towns in NC.

Jacksonville is really clean and nice

All I said was that it's not the prettiest place to live in NC. I'm sure it is nice for some folks, but you can't compare the landscape there to what you see in places like Maggie Valley, Asheville, Blowing Rock, Wilmington, the Outer Banks, Lake James, Lake Lure, etc, etc, etc...

You are right about all those places. I have been to all of them except lake James. We also have a time share at Maggie Valley and Lake Lure.

But you need to drive down hwy 24 heading into swansboro from the east during the summer time. The view is amazing! Seems almost like a tropical paradise!

Swansboro really is one of the most underrated towns in NC.
