Be on the lookout for "Future I-587" signs to pop up along US-264 within the next few months.

AASHTO updated their website. Here's a copy of NCDOT's application for Future I-587:

Now put one in Jacksonville.

My opinion is that I-140 should stretch to Jacksonville up the Highway 17 corridor. The Hampstead bypass could be the next extension and then the corridor could be designated and the Jacksonville bypass could be part of the route.

I think you'll find this an interesting read. It's a feasability study that VDOT did in 2006 for a potential I-99 that would run from I-95 in SC just north of Savannah, GA to I-95 near Wilmington, DE. Good stuff.
