The jobless rate for the Wilmington metro area was 11.1% in January, compared to last year's January figure of 11%. Those should be sobering numbers for anyone considering moving to the area. The complete article is here: Area's unemployment rate up | StarNewsOnline.com

Wilmington's metro unemployment rate is about to drop...because Brunswick Co has been dragging it down and is not being re-categorized into Myrtle Beach's metro.

New Hanover Co was 10.4%....Brunswick Co was 12.2%

OUCH! Even not including Brunswick County, a 10.4% Unemployment rate for New Hanover is horrible.

There is nothing in ILM except retail and fast food jobs...hence the reason for high crime, poverty, and miserable people with the exception of the rich who live in their enclaves near Wrightsville Beach.

Really? A quick check of the top 10 employers in Wilmington list GE, PPD, Verizon, and Corning. That's besides UNCW, the government and the hospital network....you seem to be describing Dayton Ohio, not Wilmington NC.

The reason the unemployment rate is so high in Wilmington is because many have moved without a job...and just assume they are there for the taking. The construction industry shutdown is the biggest culprit. You had folks move here that were construction oriented and then had nothing to fall back on when the building stopped.

The hospitality industry continues to increase...a Marriott is under construction downtown and an Embassy Suites is planned...some significant talk of a new hotel in Carolina Beach as well.

Welcome to the new normal. Even if the Federal government finds a way to statistically lower the unemployment rate, you will still have the same numbers of people that are not working. And all the while, government entitlement programs like Medicaid and SNAP (food stamps) will continue to expand.
