Not sure how this got by everyone outside of Wilmington, but the Census released new designations for their census areas.
Big changes:
Greenville MSA no longer includes Greene County. Greenville MSA & Washington uSA are combined into the Greenville-Washington CSA
New Bern-Morehead City CSA made up of New Bern MSA and Morehead City uSA
Fayetteville MSA and Lumberton-Laurinburg CSA are now the Fayetteville-Lumberton-Laurinburg CSA, made up of Fayetteville MSA, Lumberton uSA and Laurinburg uSA
Wilmington MSA lost Brunswick County, and is just New Hanover and Pender. Brunswick is now in the Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach, SC-NC MSA
Wilson County is now a uSA and combines with Rocky Mount MSA and Roanoke Rapids uSA to form the Rocky Mount-Wilson-Roanoke Rapids CSA
The Virginia Beach-Norfolk, VA-NC CSA now is comprised of Elizabeth City, NC uSA, Kill Devil Hills uSA and Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News MSA. The Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News MSA is comprised of Currituck County and Gates County.
It seems like Eastern NC became more urbanized as a whole over the past 10 years.

it is also apparent that some MSA's cross state lines, and NC "lost" counties to the Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach MSA's.
I don't believe the colors mean anything. But these were the only maps I found with the new groupings. Wilmington and Brunswick County are definitely pissed that they are separated.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but will Leland and Southport remain part of Wilmington MSA, or does this apply to all of Brunswick County?
Oh. If only. It's all of Brunswick, because the Census Bureau and OMB seem to think Leland and Brunswick County are suburban Myrtle Beach instead of Wilmington even though about 85 percent of Brunswick County commutes to Wilmington on a daily basis....
Luckily Wilmington City Council and Brunswick County Council have already approved a request to have it put back. Mike McIntyre says he will do whatever he can to get Brunswick County back, and thinks the decision is RIDICULOUS.... And it most certainly is. Hopefully they will change it back. Guessing they will now that all the councils, our congressman, etc. are backing it.
UPDATE: Just thought I would give most recent information I found out. Didn't see it on news earlier because they are all covering the terrible tragedy that happened today in Boston.
Senator Kay Hagan has now written a letter to the Census Bureau/OMB requesting Brunswick County be placed back in Wilmington Metro also. She wrote in her letter, "The assertion that Brunswick County shares closer core and economic ties to Myrtle Beach than Wilmington is incorrect."
They create CSA or MSA based on driving/commuting patterns. If two counties have a high percentage of commuting between one another its a MSA; less but still significant then a CSA.
We had hoped to have some clarity by the census in ENC...but its as clear as mud. The problem the census has is they seem unwilling to break up counties which causes changes that don't make sense. The Wilmington one is the easiest example...not including municipalities INSIDE of the Wilmington loop project within Wilmington's MSA...that's just stupid...and inherently incorrect. Too many stats and not enough common sense.
IMO, the area's in ENC should be bigger because the larger cities continue to wield more and more influence. There are less and less "micro" area's IMO, but the census keeps showing a bunch of them. They took Greene Co away from Greenville, when in fact Greenville could have included Greene, Martin, Beaufort and Hyde....even Bertie and Washington for that matter. For Wilmington, not only the Brunswick Co thing but Columbus, Sampson and Duplin could all be included in Wilmington's MSA.
Rocky Mount and Wilson are about 30 miles apart and always have been tied at the hip by I-95....they even share a small airport...no reason Wilson should be a micro area...they should be a three county region that stands on its own.
I agree that the Wilmington-Brunswick thing is ridiculous. Don't know how in the world they came up with the idea to give Brunswick to Myrtle Beach.
