I currently have virgin mobile here in CT, spotty when in NC, doesn't work inside at all. I don't have a contract, so will change over if I can find a service that works in both locations.

Verizon is your best bet in NC. Not because of Verizon, but b/c Verizon bought ALLTELL which was excellent in NC. Especially rural areas. AT&T would be second.

Edit: This is no doubt b/c ALLTELL wireless was launched in NC.

I agree with the AllTell comments...the other big carrier in ENC is US Cellular, in many cases it is the only carrier with towers in some of the rural areas of ENC.

Verizon, I just traveled from Maine to NC and had great coverage the whole way. No problems at all in Eastern NC.

We had Verizon for years, and it was great traveling (camping) up and down the coast. Got a smartphone as a gift, so had to go to Virgin Mobile. Neighbor in River Run Plantation says US Cellular is his choice, I'd go back to Verizon if I knew for sure it worked in the Sunset Harbor area. Thanks for the responses so far.

I'd say if you don't travel a lot and don't need the latest greatest iPhone or other smartphone (though they do still have a great smartphone selection and faster upgrades) go with US Cellular. If you travel continental a lot, go with Verizon. If you travel internationally then go with AT&T or be sure you get a Verizon phone that's GSM (sim card) capable.

Looks like Verizon gets the most votes-----BTW, a couple of years ago I went to Wales/England and setting up to be able to call home with Verizon was unbelievably easy, and the service was great. We do eventually plan a trip all over the US once DH retires, in the meantime, not having phone service at River Run is a real pain. Thanks everyone!

Yeah...go with Verizon...it was alltel...then 360 communications before that...an eastern NC company. US Cellular is really good for JUST eastern NC as well...so Verizon is your best bet. I storm chase in eastern NC and I use the verizon hotspot through out all the eastern NC rural areas...like Pamilico co...Jones co...Pender co...and it works...lol...verizon is easily the number one choice.
