My husband makes about $95,000. I homeschool our two kids and stay home.

If we rent a house for about $1800 and never eat out -- unless you count a cone at Diary Queen -- is it crazy to think that we can "make it" in Wilmington?

Also, is Wilmington a dog-friendly area?

Thanks for your help!

Alley

Pretty much. But the churches all have food pantries.
That should help you get through the month.

So, all joking aside: $95,000 is not enough money to have a life in Wilmington? For a family of four? I can take the truth, but I can take it a lot better before we move than after.

Wait. I'm not sure I understand your response. I just checked a Cost of Living Index and it said that the town/state we're currently in is almost comparable to Wilmington. According to it, we can make 3% less living in Wilmington and maintain our current lifestyle.

Is there something the Cost of Living Index isn't taking into account?

Good grief, you don't have to pay that much to rent. If you can live in 3 bedrooms, there SFH's and townhomes for rent at 1100-1200/month, with utilities extra. Your husband's income is way above the median family income, and you can check that at the main CD profile on Wilmington.

I think you can find a rental with a dog, as long as its not an aggressive breed or a large dog. There are dog parks and some restaurants allow dogs on the outside. I'd say it's not a bad area for dog owners.

No, MrRational was being sarcastic (I think).

Thanks! Can you point me toward areas that somewhat upscale? Also, would it be crazy to live near the ocean?

Thanks again,

Alley

There are nice neighborhoods all over Wilmington, but I'd suggest living close to your husband's job. The 28405 and 28403 areas are my suggestion for central locations, and reasonably close to Wrightsville Beach in 28480. Otherwise, the 28409 and 28412 are close to Carolina Beach.

There is nothing crazy about wanting to live near the ocean, as long as you understand that you may have to evacuate because of a hurricane every few years. For example, check out what you can rent for under $1800 in 28409. Realtor.com shows 5 houses, ranging from $1050 to $1625, and all have 3 or 4 bedrooms and 2 or more baths.

He'll be working for the Hanover Med Ctr.

Thanks
