My wife and I are going to visiting in-laws in Camden, NC the third week of September, and plan to hit the OBX for fishing the surf/piers and/or sounds. We've never been down this late in the year, and are wondering where to go, and what to expect to find in the water at that time. Any hints, advice, favorite spots, recommendations on piers or baits that any can suggest? What types of fish are to be found along the banks in mid/late September?
From where we'll be staying, anywhere from the Northern Beaches to Oregon Inlet will be 45 minutes to an hour away. We're experienced fishermen, but never in late September, and not looking to do any pin-rigging or take any boat rides. I've always heard that the fishing there really heats up after Labor day, with puppy drum in the surf and Blues and Spanish from the piers, but any advice/suggestions from long-time anglers is much appreciated!

Not an experienced fisherperson, but the US Open King Mackeral Tournament (big $$$$$ ) is the first weekend in October in Southport,so there's some good fishing around then.
