My husband and I have been looking at condos/townhouses all weekend in the Southport and Carolina Beach area. We really like Indigo Plantation but it looks like an incomplete "village". Does anyone know anything about this area? Who tends to live in the townhouses in the front? Renters? Permanent residents? Second homers? Also does Southport allow the use of golf carts in town? Thanks!

There is a general North Carolina law on "street legal" golf carts operation on street at less than 35 miles per hour. Street legal carts are supposed to be registered and have headlights, turn signals, reflectors etc. Localities have the right to make their own laws, and I am not sure whether Southport has specific rules. It would be easy to call a golf cart dealer, or the Town of Southport. Note that in many beach communities the laws are "bent" by people running ordinary golf carts. Here's one explanation: IS GOLF CART CRUSIN’ LEGAL? | Common Elements

Indigo Plantation has seen a better day. I ride there with the bike club. We like it for the lack of traffic. The Bald Head Island ferry used to depart from Indigo but has since moved to the deepwater port several miles away on the other side of Southport. The parking lots have been overrun with weeds making that part of Indigo very unattractive. I find it quite unappealing overall.
