There's not much in Swansboro at all. I'd go north or south.
My thought on Swansboro is that its not far to Jacksonville for the Target or some other shopping. Its a nice small town. The schools and community feel are pretty good and its easy access to the beach.
I've seen a lot of Wilmington suggestions in this thread. Wilmington is a great city, but if traffic is a concern then consider this. It is huge in comparison to any other NC coastal city. Wilmington surpassed the 100,000 population mark a couple of years back. I live in Morehead City along what is referred to as the Crystal Coast-Our population is somewhere around 8,000.
So if you have traffic concerns, Wilmington offers the greatest potential for traffic year round.
Wilmington is also a college town with approx. 14,000 students
Jacksonville is the youngest town in the US with the average age just under 23. According to military.com Jacksonville has a population of almost 82,000. As memory serves, there are about 25,000 active duty military personnel
Now I'm sure I have offended a few already and I'm sure I'm about to offend a few more. But I do not consider Jacksonville, New Bern or Greenville "coastal" cities. River cities, yes but not coastal.
There are touristy spots all over coastal NC. Tourism is the second largest industry in NC with the beach the number one vacation destination. Tourism generates $17-$18 Billion annually. But with that said, there are definitely low traffic, non-touristy places. A lot of coastal NC is inaccessible and or remote. But these days just about anywhere is within 30 minutes of chain store shopping.
If you can-Visit ENC and see for yourself. Coastal NC is very diverse.
