I love the Hilton Garden Inn at Kitty a Hawk. Nice area, lovely beach. Also like Hampton Inn up near Corolla. DH has a million Honors points, but even if I didn't get free rooms I would stay at these 2, both have nice location, amenities, and beaches are great.
We stayed at the Hamption Inn and Suites in Corolla. It's situated in the middle northern area of the outer banks and it's a very nice hotel with ocean views. I'm particular about where we stay and this place was clean and the staff was courteous.
Thanks we are driving down while on vacation in the triangle area.
Yeah, unless you are going straight there from NY and then coming here, it's not worth it for 2 days. If you're coming to the Triangle and want to go to the beach, go to the Wilmington area. It's a long 4 hours to OBX from here.
I don't have a specific hotel recommendation (I only rent houses when I go)...but If your trip is just a few days, I would recommend finding a place in the Kitty Hawk/Nags Head area. This area is central to many restaurants, beaches, Wright Brothers, Jockey's Ridge state park, etc. Staying in this area would cut down on driving time while you are there, and it would put you in the middle of most things you might want to do. Personally, this is my favorite place to stay when I go.
As pointed out above, it is a much longer drive to the Outer Banks than it is to Wilmington. If you're just looking for some sand and water, you can cut your drive in half by just going to Wilmington. But if you're like me, and you like being at the beach, but don't really want to spend all day in the water...then I would recommend the Outer Banks...I love the atmosphere and the abundance of things to do.
The Outer Banks is a bit of a haul in August. You may want to consider something a bit more convenient, like Atlantic Beach. They have a number of hotels, a decent amount of alternative options (e.g. NC Aquarium) and the drive can be visually way more appealing. Plus it only takes just under three hours to make the drive.
Also as an aside, North Carolina beach season ends roughly the second week of August because schools kick-off a week or so later. So depending on when you're traveling down here again your options one week might be completely different than the next one.
