Hi, My family will be vacationing there in April and this is our first time in the outer banks and was wondering what can we expect weather wise and what are some affordable if possible free activities to do? we love lighthouses and the outdoors and exploring nature. we are from south Jersey so we do love the beach as well.
thanks

Weather is variable from nice to chilly. You might order the travel guide at this site: The Outer Banks - North Carolina Vacations - Family Beach Vacation Rentals - The Outer Banks - North Carolina

I would check the things in Manteo, like the Skatepark and the livesaving station: http://www.townofmanteo.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={887829A3-F959-42C2-95C7-248BCDF8D423}&DE={DB765E74-C9DC-4CBF-A56D-B4E1DB72F6E9}

My family vacationed last April, the weather was kinda brisk on some days, however a light jacket or hoodie was fine.
Jockey Ridge is best free fun thing to do other than walking on the beach. Bring or buy kites.
Once in middle it like being in a hilly desert, it never gets old especially for kids.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse up in Corolla will be closest. It also has a nice boardwalk trail near the parking lot to look at beautiful NC wildlife and in some spots you might spot cottonmouth snakes.
It also has educational building and fields to fly a kite or just watch others fly.

After the lighthouse and still have energy, there is estuary with small parking lot 500 ft from the end of highway 12 in the curve.
It also has a beautiful boardwalk emerse in the loblolly pines and unique vegetation to the area. The boardwalk at first may seem long but the treat of seeing estuary is well worth it.
You have to motivate others to move along from reading all the signs of what klind of plants lol the signs will be there on the way back

If it rains there is a affordable aquarium in Manteo.

Yeah, you'll be wearing clothes all week.

Don't forget the Festival Park in Manteo...there is a replica Queen Elizabeth boat and indian huts, etc...I believe its free. Fort Raleigh, the aquarium and the shops on the waterfront in Manteo are all worth a visit this time of the year.

A trip to Corrolla for the lighthouse and a few other sights is worth it...if you have 4 wheel drive you can drive out on the beach and look for the horses...if you want to spend some money you can rent a trip.

And Jockey's Ridge is a must see.

Its not a great time for that trip, but most things will be open and there will not be a ton of people, so from that standpoint you should be able to enjoy your time there together.

Im from Currituck, just over the bridge. I wouldnt plan a vacation before early June. Even in May it can be a little cold. Being near the water just makes it that much more chilly. Coming before the season starts can save you a little money, and the crowd hasn't started yet, but you wount get the whole Outer Banks summer thing. As mentioned. Lots to see there if you are not going to get in the water.

Most likely about 10 degrees warmer than the Jersey shore. Weather.com is a very helpful website.
