I currently live in PA, but plan to move to NC soon. I've heard certain credit bureaus are used in the north, and certain bureaus are in the south. In particular, what bureaus are used when buying a car?

Why does it matter? All three of your reports shoukd contain the same information and produce very similar scores UNLESS one of them is incorrect. In that case, get it fixed.

one exception (that I am aware of) is IRS tax liens. I've never been able to decipher it, but there are some odd practices that differ in the way the agenciee report those.

I bought a car in Wilmington, but I never knew which credit bureau they used. If you think you have a problem, I would talk with a dealership business manager before you ever talk to a salesman. I'd also be sure I know which credit bureau gave me the best score, as they use different algorithms for the score.
