Big news for Goldsboro. AASHTO has rejected NCDOT's request for the US-70 corridor from I-40 in Garner to Morehead City to be designated as I-36. Instead, AASHTO designated it I-42. I-36 was rejected on grounds that it violates the numbering grid. All that remains now is final FHWA approval. The US-70 Goldsboro Bypass is now part of Future I-42.
The US-70 (soon to be I-42) Goldsboro Bypass is open! Maybe now the US-70/Grantham Street interchange won't be a parking lot at rush hour any more. They wasted no time advertising I-42. The owner of Wilber's Barbecue isn't happy at all about the bypass since he think's it will kill his business. I doubt it and he needs to get over it. This bypass was desperately needed and long overdue. NCDOT said there would be signs installed along the bypass advertising the businesses in downtown Goldsboro. Here's some pics of the ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday:
You know, I thought Wilber and the other local businesses were wrong to be pissed about the bypass, but when I saw these pics of the overhead guide signs on the Goldsboro Bypass that NCDOT installed, I don't blame the businesses one bit. These pics were taken and posted in the AARoads forum by AARoads member, slorydn1. (Permission was given to post these pics)
This pic was taken on westbound US-70 just west of La Grange at the beginning of the Goldsboro Bypass. The control cities for the Bypass are Goldsboro and Raleigh and the sign for existing US-70 westbound towards downtown Goldsboro is La Grange. WTF?! At that point, you had already passed La Grange! Goldsboro needs to be on the sign for existing US-70 westbound, not La Grange! The Bypass sign should be Smithfield and Raleigh, not Goldsboro and Raleigh!
This next pic was taken on eastbound US-70 facing the beginning of the western end of the Goldsboro Bypass near Rosewood. The sign for existing US-70 which goes through Goldsboro, has Kinston and New Bern while the sign for the Bypass just lists Wilson as the destination. Wilson shouldn't be used at all except at the I-795 interchange! "TO I-795" is enough for Wilson-bound traffic since almost everybody knows I-795 goes to Wilson. NC-44 is still on the sign even though NC-44 has been decommissioned since last October. Kinston and New Bern should be used on the US-70 Bypass sign and Goldsboro should be used for US-70.
I'm glad the bypass was built and it was much needed, but NCDOT really screwed up with the signs. Goldsboro city leaders need to get on NCDOT's ass and get them to fix this crap ASAP. The way NCDOT has the signs set up, they got long-distance traffic going through Goldsboro instead of around it and got local and Goldsboro-bound traffic going around Goldsboro! Good job, NCDOT!

Christ...I just looked at Google Maps of the area and you are right. I don't know how you can screw up directions that badly.
If i lived in Goldsboro or La Grange, i'd be complaining to NCDOT about this, too.

The local business owners along US-70 in Goldsboro weren't happy about the bypass being built in the first place since they were worried that it would take away from their business. The bypass itself wouldn't hurt their businesses much, if any, but they have every reason to be worried now since NCDOT did such a lousy job with the signs. That's one of the worst sign jobs I've ever seen in my life. The Goldsboro city council seriously needs to address this problem and bring it to NCDOT's attention. This isn't good for the city at all.
It's official. Wendy's is coming to Rosewood. The Goldsboro City Council approved site and landscape plans during last Monday's city council meeting. It will be built at the corner of US-70 and NC-581. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year.
A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, July 14, for the Maxwell Regional Agricultural and Convention Center. Construction is supposed to be finished by December 2017 or January 2018, depending on the weather.
