5 great, lesser-known places to retire

Warm climate, cost of housing, proximity to the coast, medical services, and growth touted as reasons.

Have to say I agree, and would likely include Washington into the service area. New Bern is maybe a little more well known, but Eastern NC communities are increasingly on the map as retirement area's.

Wait, are we talking about the same Greenville, NC that's had a relative murder crime spree for the last 5 years or so?

Unfortunately, retirees don't bring jobs. That is what Eastern NC needs more than anything.

Greenville would make a GREAT retirement community! I'd like to add that because of the medical school and medical center, Greenville educates many professionals who will be able to help care for retired folks. It has a low cost of living compared to many bigger cities, and while Greenville proper has a high crime rate, people don't have to hang out on 5th street. They can live in Winterville, for example, and be completely insulated from the gangs and crime.

Greenville is a wonderful place to live.

I don't see any statistics that show an increase in the murder rate in Greenville over the past dozen years or so.

It hasn't. Any "statistics" that shows anything dramatic, is due to the limited number of actual events.

It's actually fallen a good deal. Overall crime has fallen considerably over the last 10 years or so. According to the City-data crime index Greenville had an index in 2001 of 710. It was 374 in 2012 and is even lower now. There have only been 2 murders so far this year.
