I don't commute every day, don't know that I would want to but 17 is 4 lane, 2 going each way and generally moves pretty well. Lights and speed reduction in Hampstead will slow you down. Depending on your start and end points there is essentially an interstate like road at the Wilmington end that is 70mph for a few miles. All the typical variables come into play, rush hour, weather, accidents, maybe some farm machinery from time to time, and as always, idiot drivers.

Its all relative and what you can tolerate. A 50 mile commute you can do in about an hour. There are places you are lucky to travel 10 miles in an hour.

Highway 17 near the Porter's Neck area is under construction, and it is a b**** to drive. They are putting in a central barrier with turn lanes. I'd suggest going around Wilmington on I-140, and going south on College Rd if that is convenient to where you will work.

Google maps shows another example from Catherine Lake going west on 53 and then south on I-40 to I-140, then to south on 421, and across the river on 74 to downtown: http://bit.ly/1ErIpGh
