I'm a Jersey boy, born and bred...grew up with the NJ "Shore" (shore points and Long Beach Island) and loved visiting off-season (winter, cold, no crowds, solitude, cheaper, etc).
We recently moved to the Roanoke, VA area. I'm getting a little itchy to get away for a weekend. Anyone have some good suggestions on a stretch of NC beach that would be pretty quiet this time of year (maybe all of them?), but has some good eats, etc. The kids would want to collect shells and bug out on the sand a little. My wife and I would want to sit and stare at the waves, check out some little shops, surfshops, etc. Definitely eat some fresh seafood.
I couldn't care less about fancy hotels. A clean, cheap little mom-n-pop motel near the beach is great by me. Suggestions needed for that as well! If any of the coastal campgrounds were open, I'd consider that too. I've been looking at OBX, Carolia Beach, Emerald Isle, etc. Thanks!

You can actually do better than a motel and campground during the off season in a house rental.
I am big fanatic over the outer banks. Even during the summer you can find large stretches of beach that your practically have to yourself due to they dont allow skyscraper hotels on most of the OBX.

The rental I got this past May I only paid $595 for seven days. It was 4 bedroom 3 bath home fully equipped with all kitchen supplies. It had a hot tub and heated swimming pool for just staying at the house relaxation. It had a captains deck on top level and decks on each side of the next level with either views of the ocean or the canal that had ducks and turtles.

I was within walking distance of a grocery store or beach shops. I like how they control development there everything was almost mom n pop type stores and mostly no chain stores or restaurants. I felt like I was in paradise especially when the sunset over the sound. (I have photos btw)

For enternaiment there is 4 light houses to check out; Ocracoke Island is gorgeous island and the free ferry ride over was a treat. There is other sites to see like Kill Devils Hills,
Jockey Ridge largest sand dune on the east coast it like an oasis.
But definitely a great place to get to know your family, read a book and listen to the sea gulls.
