I live in New Bern and would like to know if there are any good spots for stargazing (that I won't get shot or arrested for going on someone's property :P )

You know, the hazy humidity of NC summers has always impeded me somewhat from stargazing, especially around the horizons where the haze tends to accumulate. Unfortunately its also the summer when there's the most interesting things in the sky for me.

If I were you, I would just drive around the countryside where there are some vast, open expanses. (there are still a few around ENC) Many of the farmer's fields will have access roads and you can pull off to the side and look up there. At least that's what I've done in the past with no problems. I wouldn't stop anywhere where there's a house nearby though.

Are people able to go into Croatan National Forest at night? That would be a perfect place. Like off of Catfish Lake Road or something
