Was at dinner up here in NJ last night with 4 other couples and we had a interesting discussion on the topic of "Winters" in Brunswick County. I did more listening than talking but i would really be interested in thoughts of individuals where this was their first or second winter living down there? Everyone was in agreement the Spring, Summer, and fall will be like heaven but as respects winter how did you and your significant others find living down there when its not beach or golf weather? How did you keep yourself busy and occupied.

Want to be prepared when we go out again when this topic I know will come up.

Thanks...

PS I laughed when the comments kept coming up that one would be so far from a big city like NYC.

Most of us haven't been in the Big Apple other than work in over 20 years on a weekend night....

Priceless..

Winters are up and down. One week it's like New Jersey and the next week it's like northern Florida. When it's cold we tend to stay in, when it warms up we go out and do normal Spring/Fall activities.

Not sure who told you summer "was like heaven", but you should certainly come and see it for yourself in July. It's warmer than the NE in the winter, but it definitely isn't warm...

This is our third winter here, but I hope it's OK to reply. We used to live in Maryland and it is a relief not to have to shovel snow. We had a couple of light dustings last year. We don't need the heavy winter coats and I have never needed gloves or boots.

There are plenty of indoor things to do, and we are not athletes or golfers anyway. I read books, my husband is building a kit car in the garage. He has a space heater in the garage, and it's tolerable.

If I want a dose of culture, I drive to Raleigh. I had gone there for the exhibit of small Dutch portraits at the NC Museum of Art. I made an overnight trip, and took some time to explore a few Raleigh neighborhoods.

The one thing I miss about the Maryland house is natural gas heat. When the heat pump blows blows on your skin it is a bit chilly. I wear a sweater most of the time in the winter. We do burn the propane fireplace in the evenings.

I don't mean to hijack this tread (which is interesting to me as well) but I am curious if anyone has a gas furnace vs a heat pump. We are meeting with builders next week and we will be asking if a gas furnace is an option.

Thanks!

I have a dual unit (can't think of the correct nomenclature...split unit?) on my first floor (propane heat and electric a/c). The heat is much warmer than the heat pump on the second floor. Obviously, propane is expensive, but I live in Southport proper, so electricity is very expensive here, too. Overall, I like it.

Gas furnaces (either propane or natural gas) are not very common around here. For one thing, natural gas is only available in southern Brunswick County, near Myrtle Beach. For another thing, we don't have basements, so the builder has to plan an alternative location. But, you should certainly ask about it, and see whether it is worth paying extra for.

What did you do during winter back in NJ? I catch up my reading and stuff like that in winter on days when I can't enjoy being outdoors.

Natural gas is common in other areas of NC. Surprised that its an issue down there. We have a gas-pack in Chapel Hill and I believe my folks had gas in Fayetteville also.
