We are (casually) looking for place to buy a piece of land and build a retirement home on. We are quite sure that we don't want to buy anything already built, as we have many things we would like to incorporate into our forever home.

That said, ideally, we would like a place with several acres, therefore not in a community. However, we don't want to be too far off the beaten path, either.

We seem to like the Rt. 17 (Ocean Highway) corridor from the SC state line up to Wilmington, but would sort of prefer to be Supply or southwest.

Now, all those things considered, we would also prefer to be in an area served by municipal (county) water and sewer if possible. I am curious if there are any infrastructure maps available, in order to know where we could focus on.

If your try the Brunswick County GIS, turn on the layer called sanitary districts. I believe, the areas in color are the locations with county sewer. They are around Carolina Shores, Sunset Beach, Calabash city, Ocean Isle Beach, Shallotte, Holden Beach, Varnumtown, etc. Here; Brunswick County GIS

If your are looking for several acres with city water and sewer, I believe it may be difficult to find at a reasonable price. That kind of area would be ripe for subdivision, however, I wish you luck.
