What is the best Outer Banks beach town to visit and the best time to go. I have never been to a North Carolina beach.

"Best" depends on what you are interested in. Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk have the tourist attractions like para-sailing, lots of hotels and restaurants. Hatteras, Buxton, etc are quieter and great for surfing and fishing. For complete solitude and a beautiful beach, you can go to Ocracoke.

As far as the timing, July and August are the peak season and the most expensive. However, September and October are still warm enough to be enjoyable.

Fall for sure, but in September and to a degree in October you have am moderate hurricane risk. If you go in May or June, the wind is generally a little less. The Outer Banks vary wildly, you need to tell us what your are after to get a better answer.

I really just want to relax but I know my kids will also want some other activity than the beach. I really want to see a lighthouse and maybe some historical stuff too because that is what I like.

Our family loves Duck, Southern Shores and Corolla. Kill Devil is too touristy if you want to relax. Having said that, though, we are now living on Oak Island and love the Brunswick County beaches - all different depending what you want but very family friendly here.

I think Duck sounds like a great match for your family.

The Outer Banks are great, but just to clarify the Outer Banks refers to only a portion of the NC beaches. There are more than 300 miles of coastline along NC shores and the OBX is about 100 miles of that.
