Been years since I've been in the Wilmington area and just googling it appears the culinary scene has changed.

Are there any good Mexican restaurants? Any taquerias (taco shops)?

I grew up in NC and hated when people from the west coast or Texas would come out and trash talk the Mex food, but now that I've been living out west (Phoenix area) for a while I think I might be one of those trash talkers.

I think the big difference is the lack of any sauces (e.g. - red and green chili) from what I remember eating back in NC. Everything had queso or shredded cheese on it, which is more like Taco Bell than anything. My hopes or expectations are too high, but it sure would be awesome to find a place with Al Pastor tacos.

Taqueria Los Portales is a really good, divey mexican place. I have heard Taqueria La Tapatia and La Guera are also really good, although La Guera is in a very out of the way location. K38 Baja Grill (and its sister restaurant, Tower 7 Baja Grill) are good for Cali-mex food, more gringo-ized than you're looking for.
