Check Craigslist for Wilmington. Mobile homes and houses in outlying areas will be less expensive than locations in Wilmington. For example, look at Rocky Point, Burgaw, Winnabow, Maple Hill or maybe Wallace.

If the wage earner's job is in Wilmington, the OP might also want to consider the Ogden, Kings Grant or Pine Valley neighborhoods. There will be many modest, older single family houses for rent.

It would help to supply a budget, and the requirement for schools. I am assuming Wilmington will be more expensive than where you are coming from in South Carolina.

You have a feasible budget for a small house. Just be careful, as some cheap houses may be in undesirarble neighborhoods. Feel free to ask forum members about specific neighborhoods. In general, Ogden and Pine Valley are nice and family-friendly areas. Kings Grant may look a bit run-down, but it is OK.

People may tell you to look at Monkey Junction for inexpensive and safe housing. That's in the south part of Wilmington, and it is officially called Myrtle Grove.

Because of the fact that new houses are being built in those 2 areas everyday the cost of living has gone up to live in Monkey Junction or Myrtle Grove it is not a cheap ares to live anymore !
