Hello. I was wondering if anyone could help me out. My husband, our teenage son and I are going to be relocating to the Jacksonville area in June. We choose this area because it's closer to our two daughters and grandson. Now the delimia is what town we would like to move to. We know we want to be within an hour drive of Jacksonville and in a smaller town but can be outside of Jacksonville or Wilmington. We would love to have a town that is outsider friendly. A thirty minute commute to work isn't to bad, use to that, but we do want to be in an area where there are jobs for me (dental assistant) and our son. It would also be nice if there's a community college or technical school near. I know what's available in Jacksonville but didn't want to move directly in that town. Thank you for all your in put its greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

May I recommend where I live in Sneads Ferry. It is a small town about 18 miles from downtown Jacksonville and 35-40 miles from Wilmington. That would be a 30 minute commute to Jacksonville.

Because there are so many military folks in the area, it is exceptionally friendly to outsiders. It probably would not be hard to find a dental assistant job nearby or in Jacksonville.

There's the Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville, and Cape Fear CC in Wilmington. Jobs for kids include grocery store stocking, pizza delivery, fast food, lawn service, etc.

We just bought a home in Hampstead. In the Crown Pointe community. We picked Hampstead because it is centrally located between Jacksonville and Wilmington. We also wanted to be near the ocean and its a 10 minute drive to Topsail Island. Good luck!

Thank you so much Goldenage and Stevensmom. I'm going down there this week so I'm definitely checking these places out. And if you can think of anything else that would be appreciated to. Thanks again.

New Bern, home to a million retirees is certainly outsider friendly, as long as you pay with cash!

I would look at Swansboro.

You might want to keep in mind, that the further you go east, the further you have to go to get anywhere else!

Good luck.

Good luck with your move. Pender County Schos are supposed to be fabulous which is why we chose Hampstead too. That and of course the beach.

Thank yall so much! I am going down there tonight to check these places out. Is Hampstead the only town between Jacksonville and Wilmington I should check out? Is there other small towns in between? Thank yall so much.

Of course there are other towns: Surf City, Topsail Beach, Holly Ridge and Sneads Ferry. They are all strung out along Highway 17, but you should drive south towards the waterfront. The are numerous housing developments along the way, so pick those in your price range. (Houses will sell from about $170K to over $400K, depending on how close to the water and the amenities.)

I assumed your son had graduated from college, so the school systems should not make much difference. Property taxes are a tad higher in Pender County than in Onslow County. However, there are more amenities like doctors, dentists and grocery stores in Pender County as one is closer to Wilmington.
