Hi, My family and I moved to the Wilmington area last fall from PA. We decided to rent a house until we are sure just what area we wanted to buy in. In any event, we rented a very nice house, however, the last tenant had "just" moved out and there were roaches! They freaked me out. They did have a bug spray company come, but one thing that really helped was this powder we bought at Lowes. It's mostly made of boric acid. We made sure to pull out the kitchen appliances and sprinkled it behind them and well, everywhere! We also used this stuff that you spray that puffs up and fills any small holes so the little buggers can't get it. Well, we thought after winter they would come back, but amazingly we've only seen a couple after that and maybe a tiny one or two..., then dead ones here and then, and now -- nothing and its hot outside! Also, though your pets shouldn't eat it directly, it has not bothered them one bit. So, I would recommend getting the white powder for bugs with the boric acid. I know some sites recommended using yeast, boric acid and a little sugar on a cotton ball to bring them out and the yeast and boric acid will kill them when it reaches their stomachs. Gross, but hey it works! Works for ants too. Its good to keep things closed up and in the fridge if you've got problems. Good luck!

Wow, lots of great recommendations. I actually have human grade DE and put it in my pets food. It keeps parasites out of their system. Will sprinkle it around the new rental along with the boric acid powder. Haven't seen anything here except the creepy "no see ums" and Mosquitos. Outside lots of black carpenter ants around the trees. Welcome to coastal NC :-)
