the folks in handcuffs were suspected of serious offenses. You would have merely received a citation had one of your taillights been non-functioning.

Unless they're doing something different there, the individual policemen weren't making any money, just the county/state. And they didn't "make" any money other than the fines related to offenses.

As the law-abiding citizen, who maybe didn't make it to your destination by sundown, I know how you feel. But once you got to the stop, they checked you over quickly and let you go on your way.

Waterboy - exactly my point, the time added to the trip. A few minute delay is one thing, 45 minutes is unacceptable for a non-accident stoppage.

Wheelsup, law enforcement salaries are not the issue here, we all chose our career and know our salary going into it. No doubt they didn't set it up and were just doing their jobs (maybe) - none of that excuses the lengthy delay.

Actually, the police doing these checkpoints are all getting overtime. Checkpoints are almost always separate details from routine duty. Typically officers from many jurisdictions will be working on the same check point detail. Not to say I have anything against officers making overtime to supplement their income. I just don't appreciate the fact that it's a supposedly legal way to intrude on our rights.

Be careful ... cross-posting isn't allowed on C-D. You have to pick a forum and stick with it. In this case, I would have gone with Coastal Carolina.

Ah, did not know "cross-posting" was not allowed. Thanks!

Just law enforcement doing their job. That's all you need to know. Do you know how long it took to get to Hatteras during the ferry days?

Then don't drive. Plain and simple. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

If the handcuffed were DUI's then peoples lives were probably saved by getting them off the road ....

If you "overheard" that, then it was said for your benefit because they knew you considered it
"unacceptable" to be stopped...

Kinda funny that it worked so well...
