We are travelling from Ohio to OBX tomorrow morning with our 3 kids (5,3,1). Any tips on best routes and especially what a good time to cross the bridge is? I think we should be at the bridge around 4 or 5 pm

If you mean Saturday morning, that will be the worst time, as everyone else arrives after the 3PM check-in time. Could you delay your trip a bit?

There was the same question last year. The best idea was to use a smartphone, tablet or GPS to get traffic reports. It is apparently easier to take I-40 to NC 64 through Manteo rather than coming from Virginia Beach. This discussion also covered a few alternative routes: First Time to OBX- Traffic Advice

Interstate 64 goes from West Virginia to the Norfolk, VA area.

Us 64 is entirely within North Carolina, running from Raleigh to Manteo.

From Columbus to the Outer Banks, I would probably take I-77 to I-40 (in NC), then to US 64 through Manteo. I have no experience with the other routes except that Elizabeth City is a bear to drive through.

I'll second that route with the minor change of taking I-74 off I-77 (just after you cross into NC) to I-40.

US64 actually runs from Whale Bone Junction (causeway heading into Nags Head) all the way to Arizona. I think it stretches over 2300 miles.

To the OP, where you are staying on the OBX will need to also factor into your trip. If you are staying on the southern end in the Hatteras or Okracoke Island area, you might want to take the southern US64 entrance. If you are staying on the northern end, Duck or Corolla area, you might want to take the northern entrance from VA.

North/South island traffic can be a bear sometimes.

Drive safely.
