I am planning a short trip to Williamsburg. Thus, I am looking for the best route from Jacksonville to the Hampton Roads 664 loop. I though it was Highway 17 all the way. However, Google Maps showed as shorter, more westerly route using 258 to Kinston, and then 11 and 13 through Greenville and Ahoskie, the 13 to Suffolk. Does any one have experience with the traffic on the 258/13/11/13 alternative?

I do, and that's my way whenever I want to go out to Hampton Roads. Only downside to that route from where your coming from is going through Kinston and Greenville (and going thru Kinston isn't even that bad). Once you past Greenville, there is literally nothing stooping you between Greenville and Sufflok (except being stuck being slow traffic on a 2 lane highway some of the time). There may be like 10 stoplights total between Greenville and Sufflok. Do be mindful that they may be some construction going on on Hwy 13 in Gates County (widening the road to a 4 lane highway). Also it's pretty much open country after Greenville as well.

Indeed, skip 58 and go through the Northeastern Corner of NC. I take 264/64/13/17.

Thanks. That's what I should have taken. I missed a turn in Windsor and stayed on 17 into Chesapeake, then I hit a bad delay on the old tunnel.

Next time I will try to go on the new tunnel by way of 664.

Kinston route is preferable than New Bern/Wash...once you get north of Greenville on the Kinston route you are clear sailing...albeit on 2 lane roads but there is no traffic and maybe 1 light (in Ahoskie). All the way to the VA border and into Suffolk.

There has been further talk of the I-44 interstate corridor from Raleigh to Norfolk...that is the only thing that will improve that trip from E-City to Norfolk. You don't want to go that way...ever if you dont have to.
