Seniors retiring to Wilmington-what are pros & cons? (Ogden, Carolina Beach: apartments, to rent)

I originally asked for what areas to avoid in Wilmington, but the only posts were from 2007, 2008. I would like some more recent info. We have qualified for an apt. at Cape Harbor. Spent 2 weeks looking around last Fall. Want to rent a home after 1st year. We want to know which areas to avoid, and which ones are senior friendly. We will be on a fixed income, so costs are a consideration. What are the pros and cons for seniors - or anyone?

Do you want to be in Wilmington itself (the city), or just the Wilmington area?

I am not quite sure what you are asking. The Cape Harbor Apartments are in Ogden, which is a safe area. If you want to avoid crimes, get a subscription to the Star-News, and follow the police blotter. Keep notes on where the shootings and drug arrests are, and don't go there.

I would not want to live along College because the traffic is so heavy. Otherwise, I think there is a good area south of the intersection of Independence and Carolina Beach Blvd. There are the Breezewood Condos which are reasonably priced, and you could get a ground-floor place. Nearby Merestone has some one-story townhouses, which I consider senior-friendly. Willoughby Park Road has similar one-story condos and numerous other neighborhoods along Carolina Beach Blvd have one-story houses. There is also the WAVE bus service along CB Blvd running between Monkey Junction and Independence Mall.

There are some other nice areas along Oleander Blvd and Eastwood Road. I have seen numerious seniors around Hugh McRae Park, which is a good area for walking or biking. These areas are convenient to shopping and medical care.

It is hard to suggest specific places without knowing your budget.
