Does NC have personal property tax? I did a search and tried to wade through the results but couldn't find anything specifically about *personal property* tax.

When we lived in VA, you had to pay annual taxes on everything you owned that was registered with the DMV, this was in addition to the cost of tags/registration, and was based on the assessed value of the item. So cars, boats, campers, all were taxed yearly even if you already owned it outright and it sucked!

Sorry if you already know what personal property taxes are! But I asked a couple people who live in NC and they didn't know! However, I did read on the Southport website that you DO have personal property tax, I just want to confirm.

Thanks!

Yes, same as VA, boats, cars, trailers, RVs. Same tax rate as real property.

Hi SittinInATree,

I currently live in VA, so I understand how confusing personal property taxes are here with the state rebate on your car tax.

North Carolina does have personal property taxes. Unlike Virginia where houses (real property) and cars, planes, boats, etc. (personal property) are taxed at different rates, in NC they are all taxed at the same rate.

Below is a link for Brunswick County, I am guessing that the other counties operate the same way.

I tried to "click" on "Tax Rates", and it was blank. I think I read somewhere that the Mill Rate in one area was .044, which, if I'm correct, is equal to $4.00 per thousand of value.....here, we are at $31.81 per thousand of value.....can't wait to retire and head south

Here's a link to Brunswick County tax rates:

Tax Office Brunswick County Tax Rates

Yes, you are essentially correct. Property taxes in NC are expressed per $100. In NC a tax rate of $0.44 would equal a tax of $4.40 per $1,000 of valuation.

Some places even want to tax dogs, but I don't think cats! Tax on cars now comes out with the annual registration fee.

This is the second time I've seen somebody on here mention "dog tax". You're not talking about licensing fees, are you? Those have been around for at least 40 years that I know of, and I think just about every county in the country has that.
I'd like to read more about this proposed dog tax, but I can find nothing about it online anywhere. Do you have a link I could look at?

I think it was when we lived in Salisbury that we had to list the number of dogs we had. I really can't remember. That is why I was not more specific. Sorry.

Oh ok, thanks everyone! We don't have that personal property tax here in Delaware. It costs $40 to register your car for the year and some people complain about that! We don't have sales tax, either. We do have income tax but its pretty low. And our property tax on homes is very low. I'm not very good at taxes, but I want to know what I am getting into if/when we move!

we do not have a STATE personal/real property tax. All property taxes are at the county/city level.
