My longtime boyfriend and I are seeking out some safe, smaller, coastal towns. He's a truck driver and gone 6 to 8 days at a time. We have lived in VA our whole lives and love to visit Wilmington, Morehead City, etc. HOWEVER...we like the peace and quiet and love to fish!! We are both in our 40s and have a small child. We have shifted our priorities and need some ideas on where to move. Keep in mind, I will be alone with the child 80% of the time, and I do like my privacy. Schools are important, but crime and drugs are getting so bad here where we're from, we need to be moving a.s.a.p.!! Anyone who can help?? I love the New Bern area, but he wants to view all possibilities...

You might consider living in a gated community. Where we live in Sneads Ferry, it is a very low-crime area, but the gates give me extra reassurance. Keep in mind that drugs are everywhere, and coastal North Carolina has plenty of meth labs out in the rural areas. I don't walk around being afraid of drug dealers, but we do have security in the house.

I would need more information on your budget to make any real recommendations. Newport, Dare County and Hampstead/Topsail Island have well-rated schools and many other towns have safe, average-rated schools.

I echo Southport. Quiet most of the year.

Manteo would be another interesting choice.

Our income is about 70k, but we are still very simple "folk". I raise chickens and love antiques and old homesteads, but reality proves that homes like this are passed down to family members and are rarely, if ever for rent. Gated communities are an option we've discussed, but I was more interested in the towns. My bf can run out of any area with his job, so, that's not an issue. As long as he is within 100 miles from an interstate, he's good. I do understand about the drugs...I know they are everywhere....I just can't imagine it being much worse than what it is here. The coal mines are all shutting down, so our people are being forced out or forced to live off the government. Sad, sad situation. Drugs are literally on every corner here. We've just had enough. Thanks to everyone, I will definitely look around the Southport area!

If you mean your total household income is $70k, Southport may be out of reach for you. Gated communities are definitely out of reach.

70k is not a bad income. Based on 25% for housing, they should be able to afford a 1.5k mortgage. There are lots of nice, new cottage homes etc. they could certainly afford. High end gated communities with clubs fees etc .... maybe not.
